Tips for Writing a Better Entry-Level HR Administrator Resume

1. Use dynamic verb phrases

As an HR professional, you likely have great “soft skills” like collaboration and communication. But when you refer to these skills using an adjective or noun phrase (e.g., “highly collaborative” or “strong communication skills”), they won’t usually stand out to hiring managers. That’s because (a) they’re pretty vague by themselves, and (b) countless other jobseekers use these phrases on their own resumes. To get around this problem, convert each soft skill into a verb phrase when possible – this allows you to flesh out the idea with details that are more specific and engaging.

Example:

  • Collaborate frequently with other HR personnel on new strategies and best practices for employee relations, labor negotiations, succession planning, workforce development, and compensation

 

2. Don’t worry about graduation dates

It’s generally suggested that jobseekers leave education dates off their resume to avoid discrimination. But this rule doesn’t typically apply if you finished school in the past few years and are seeking entry-level jobs. In your case, you can leave your graduation date on your resume at your discretion – employers might still use it to figure out your age, but that won’t matter if your age level is inclusive of your current career goals.

3. Spell out your results

Each of your duties has some positive impact or influence, helping your broader organization succeed in the short and long term. Speak to that broader impact in your job descriptions, and you’ll strengthen your resume significantly.

Even if you can’t recall examples or data to quantify a work area, you can always state the general, intended result or value of the duty in question. Try simply adding the phrase “in order to” at the end of the duty statement, then jotting down whatever general purposes or outcomes you think of (and then delete “in order” from your final resume for brevity). You might be surprised how much stronger the revised statement is – just as important, it’s a much more accurate account of your work’s depth and influence.
