Tips for Writing a Better Accountant Resume

Showcase your mathematical skills

Accountants deal with numbers on a daily basis and use a variety of mathematical concepts, including fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, whole numbers, order of operations and averages. To do this, they rely on software programs and specific computer tools. Show your proficiency with these systems by inserting these skills in the professional experience section of your resume using a bullet list or listing a specific skills section. By putting all of your accounting skills near the top of the page, you make it easier for a potential employer to analyze your experience and background to see if it matches the company’s needs and the skill set for the position you are applying for.

Highlight any accounting certifications

Accountants who achieve certifications are in higher demand due to their extended education and status as an elite professional. The CPA certification is the most common certification, but there are also others that may help increase your opportunities when you begin your job hunt.

Each state board of accountancy issues CPA licenses. Typically, this certification is only valid in the state you live in. When applying for an accounting job, it’s a good idea to list any certifications you have, including your CPA. You may also want to consider adding the year you received the certification, especially if you must renew the certification periodically. Leave off any certifications that aren’t relevant to your role as an accountant or in the accounting industry. For example, if you took classes to become a real estate agent and hold a realtors license, you wouldn’t need to list this on an application for a certified public accountant.

How to Align Your Resume With the Job Description

Even with an excellent education and experience, accounting and finance is a competitive field for candidates. For this reason, it’s important to customize your resume to the job description to help get you noticed by the hiring manager, company owner or recruiter. One job posting can elicit a response from hundreds of applicants, so your resume should be crafted in a way to stand out from the others and gain the attention of the reader. To do this, you should craft a custom resume to each position you apply for.

Before writing your resume, scan through the job posting and highlight the key accounting words. These words should be included in your resume when they match your skills and experience. As an accountant, focus on any positions you’ve held in the past, any coursework you took while in college or any certifications you might have achieved. Because accounting careers deal with numbers, it’s also a good idea to quantify your achievements. This makes it easier for the hiring manager to see you in the position and makes it easier to visualize past experiences.
