Tips for Writing a Better Sales Consultant Resume

1. Quantify your results

For any sales resume, performance numbers are key. But in the past few years, a rough economy has made many sales teams’ revenue uneven through no fault of their own. If this applies to you, don’t worry. There are plenty of other metrics you can focus on to show you’ve helped grow, develop, or otherwise improve the business. For instance, consider quantifying any improvements you’ve made in the areas of process efficiency or client retention.

Examples

  • Introduced best practices that streamlined new client intake procedures, driving a 12% efficiency gain.
  • Won “Sales Innovator” award in May 2021 for contribution
  • Increased client retention by nearly 20% in six months

2. Make your numbers stand out

The average reader of a resume doesn’t really “read” it in the normal sense. Instead, they quickly scan down the page, looking for details that jump out as impressive and relevant to their hiring needs. For this reason, you should present your career highlights in a way that makes it easy for the reader to understand, even at a glance. Here are three simple ways to do that:

1. Express all numbers in numeral form, including single-digit numbers. (The only exceptions are zero and one, which you should spell out as in regular prose.)
2. To abbreviate large dollar amounts, use “K” for thousand, “M” for million, and “B” for billion.
3. Use % for percentages and # for performance rankings.

Examples

  • Member of a 12-person sales team ranked #4 out of 14 store locations in region
  • Exceeded quota by 26% ($200K) in 2018

3. Cite an achievement in your Profile

Consider repeating one of your quantified achievements in your Profile. Doing so can make your resume’s introduction much more compelling and specific. The simplest way is to add a sentence starting with “Achievements include…” and just plug in whatever highlight you’d like to showcase.

Examples

  • Sales Associate with 7+ years of experience in the telecommunications industry.
  • Strategist adept at finding new ways to drive growth in competitive markets.
  • Skilled at putting complex technology topics in clear terms for diverse client audiences.
  • Equally effective in a leadership or hands-on role. Achievements include surpassing activations goals by 20%+ on average for four years.

Key Skills Hiring Managers Look for on Sales Consultant Resumes

How to Align Your Sales Consultant Resume With the Job Description

When you find a sales consultant job posting that interests you, look closely at the required skills and credentials. Are there any you possess but haven’t featured on your resume yet? If so, add a mention of that experience to your resume’s Profile or Key Skills section.

For example, say the sales job is in telecommunications. If your background is also in that industry, mention that prominently in your resume intro, as in Example 3 above. Taking this extra step will make your resume more inclusive to the job at hand and more likely to attract the hiring manager’s notice.
