Tips for Writing a Better VP of Sales Resume
1. Remember that “less is more”
An effective VP-level resume focuses on broad business strategy and change initiatives. It doesn’t need to go into a lot of detail about the daily tasks of each sales job, which are often repetitive or assumed by the hiring manager on seeing your title. So, when writing your VP of Sales resume, try to think in broad strokes: What were the significant changes that took place during your time at each company, and how did you advance that change? In what key ways did you permanently improve the division you oversaw? Your answers to these questions can help you write strong bullet points about your big-picture accomplishments.
Example
- Realigned sales division’s goals with broader company mission and values, building a more accountable and collaborative work culture
- Led team to maintain positive client relations and steady market share throughout 2020 and 2021 despite uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic
- Worked with Operations to consolidate and streamline internal sales processes, translating to a $200K bottom-line improvement
2. Quantify your sales and leadership highlights
When you specify the organization’s sales performance in terms of dollar revenue or percentage goal attainment, you make the point more tangible and compelling to hiring managers. Don’t be deterred if you can’t remember or don’t have access to exact sales data; it’s fair to give estimates if you label them as such with the ~ (tilde) symbol. And if all you know is that your team came in a little over quota, you can still make the sentence pop more (with no loss in accuracy) by stating it as “led team to generate 100%+ of quota.”
Example
- Motivated team to exceed quota by ~20% on average for eight consecutive years despite severe early challenges posed by the 2008 financial crisis
3. Summarize your early career
As a senior business leader, you may have decades of advancement and experience, making it hard to know how far back to take your work history on your resume. The rule of thumb is you only have to go back as many years as your target job requires (typically no more than 15 or 20). If the job openings that interest you call for about 15 years’ experience, that’s your cue to cap off your resume’s work history at around 2007. You can then summarize any earlier positions in a “Prior Experience” section, leaving out proper job descriptions or work dates but still citing the depth and relevance of your early career.
Example
Prior Experience
Advanced through a series of client relations and sales management roles for 123 Incorporated (Philadelphia, PA). Gained a strong foundation in key leadership principles.

How to Align Your VP of Sales Resume With the Job Description
Companies in nearly every industry need great sales leaders. When you find a VP of Sales job opening that intrigues you, take note of the company’s industry. Have you worked in the same sector? If so, mention that experience in your resume’s profile section. For instance, if the company makes home appliances, your first profile sentence might read, “Senior Business Leader with 11 years of advancement and experience including four years in home appliance sales.” Taking this extra step will make your resume more relevant to the job at hand and more likely to attract the hiring manager’s notice.
