Common Key Skills and Action Verbs for Preschool Teacher Resumes

Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to collect and sort resumes. These systems scan resumes, helping to identify top job candidates before highlighting them for hiring managers. Therefore, to gain the attention of hiring managers, you’ll need to make sure these key skills and qualifications are easily identifiable on your resume. A resume that doesn’t contain keywords and specific phrases may never pass an ATS and reach human hands. Below are some common key skills and action verbs for preschool teacher resumes.

Tips for Writing a Better Preschool Teacher Resume

Showcase your early childhood education experience

Prior experience working in education or at a childcare center is often required for a job as a preschool teacher. Therefore, it’s important to showcase your experience in early childhood education. This can include providing teacher assistance to teachers in preschools or primary schools or childcare assistance involving infants, toddlers, or preschool-aged children.

Examples

  • Organized and delivered creative and interactive activities to groups of ~20 students age 3-5, helping to facilitate their social, behavioral, and developmental progress
  • Managed classrooms of up to 20 children age 4 and 5. Taught foundational skills such as colors, shapes, and letters and controlled the class environment with clear and consistent rules and positive reinforcement

Ditch the phrase “strong communication skills”

For preschool teachers, strong communication skills are key. But countless other professionals (both in and outside education) cite “strong communication skills” on their resume. The phrase is so overused that it no longer means anything to recruiters and hiring managers. How can you express this theme in a more precise and compelling way? Here’s the trick: Convert it to a verb phrase. Specifically, start a sentence “Communicate with” or “Engage with.” Then flesh it out with details from your job experience.

Example

  • Actively engage with parents and children to build positive long-term relationships

How to Align Your Resume with the Job Description

Preschool teachers help educate young children under the age of five, with a focus on language, motor, and social skills. Jobs for preschool teachers are projected to grow by 2% (or approximately 13,500 jobs) from 2019 to 2029, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increased desire for early childhood education is expected to heighten the need for preschool teachers who work in a variety of settings, including child daycare services, religious organizations, and designated preschools.

It’s common for hiring managers to consider dozens of candidates before finding someone who fits their specific needs. By emphasizing the details found in the job description in your resume, you can set yourself apart from other applicants and gain the attention of the hiring manager. A job description usually mentions the most essential skills for a position early or more than once in the description. After spotting these important qualifications, compare your resume to the job description. Make sure your resume includes the specific requirements and skills that are revealed in the job description. At the same time, don’t lie about your qualifications on a resume. Few applicants meet every qualification sought in a job description. Instead, tailor your resume so that a hiring manager notices the relevant skills you do have.
