Tips for Writing a Better School Bus Driver Resume

1. Turn unrelated jobs into an asset

School bus drivers often work other jobs (especially during the summer break), and it can be hard to know how those should figure into your resume. But you don’t have to (nor should you) give more than the basic details on any job that doesn’t pertain to your current goals.

When drafting your work history, keep this tip in mind so you don’t type out lengthy descriptions of jobs that won’t speak to your target employers. A good resume strategy for unrelated jobs is to focus your description on the “soft skills” you gained there that now complement your overall skill set.

Example

Server, TGI Fridays, New York, NY

February 2021 to Present

  • Gained strong customer service and time management skills while taking visitors’ food and drink orders
  • Currently ranked #3 on a 15-person team for overall efficiency

2. Put your work history in the correct order

The job descriptions on your resume should be in reverse-chronological order or newest to oldest. This rule sounds simple enough, but it could confuse you if you started or ended multiple jobs at the same time or if you held a short-term job at the same time as a long-term job that ended later. First order all your positions, newest to oldest, by their END date. Then for any positions with the same end date, order them from newest to oldest, by their START date.

Example

School Bus Driver, Townsend Harris High School, New York, NY

April 2021 to Present

Server, TGI Fridays, New York, NY

February 2021 to Present

3. Spell out the impact of your work

You’ve done more than complete your daily route as a school bus driver. You’ve also brought a large number of students to their school and ensured their wellbeing and safety along the way. You’re part of an organization that provides students with new learning experiences and opportunities. Speak to these broader goals and give your resume an edge over applicants who focus only on their regular duties.

Example

School Bus Driver with 5+ years of experience at local high schools. Service-oriented and collaborative; build positive relationships with students, parents, teachers, and school officials. Trustworthy and committed to bringing students to and from school locations promptly and safely.

How to Align Your School Bus Driver Resume With the Job Description

What kinds of schools and communities have you worked for? And what age group(s) of students have you served? When looking at school bus driver job postings that interest you, keep these details in mind. If a posting includes information on the school or community that overlaps with your background, mention that in your resume profile. Taking this extra step will make your resume more relevant to the job and, therefore, more likely to attract the hiring manager’s notice.
