Dear Mr. Roland,

As a student teacher and substitute teacher at Syracuse Elementary, I served as a short-term substitute for first, third, and fourth grade classrooms with 20-25 students. I implemented and refined lesson plans using differentiated instruction to reduce the impact of teacher absences on academic performance. I hope to bring the same level of success to Brooklyn Center Elementary in the substitute teacher position.

Your organization’s reputation for academic excellence is what draws me to apply for this position. I am confident that I can provide valuable contributions to your school based on the following achievements from my professional career:

  • Delivered one on one, small group, and whole group instruction in English, math, and social studies to students across various cultural backgrounds and improved average test scores by 10%-20% in language arts
  • Performed student assessments, evaluated performance, provided differentiated instruction, and tailored curriculum to student needs
  • Coordinated with the teacher during absences to review IEPs, discuss student behavior, and ensure alignment with core curriculum and teaching strategies

I would like to schedule an interview to discuss further how differentiated instruction expertise can drive student growth for Brooklyn Center Elementary. You may contact me via phone or email at your convenience for any questions you may have. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Substitute Teacher Cover Letter Checklist

A good professional substitute teacher cover letter has five main elements:

1. Heading. Use a stylized template to help your information stand out. Be sure to include the following pieces of information in your header:

  • Your name, title, and contact info
  • The date you sent the letter
  • The addressee’s details

2. Salutation. Greet the hiring manager by Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use “Dear Hiring Manager” instead.

3. Introduction. 1. You want to lead with a strong accomplishment that aligns with the organization’s needs. This is your first opportunity to make an impression on the hiring manager, so you want to provide an achievement that demonstrates your expertise as an educator. For example, if your efforts improved test scores or academic performance, you should provide a metric that showcases these results.

4. Body paragraphs. Continue to highlight your accomplishments in the subsequent body paragraphs. Provide a mix of examples that emphasize your leadership and teaching skills. You’ll want to mention the school’s reputation or mission statement here and explain how it aligns with your background. Also, consider implementing a list of bullet points to help break up the content on the page.

5. Closing section. Include a call-to-action (CTA) in your final paragraph to invite the hiring manager to contact you for an interview or request additional information. Opening the door for this next step will show your confidence and interest in the position. Be sure to thank the reader for their time in the final sentence.

Grabbing the hiring manager’s attention early often makes all the difference in securing an interview. It’s important to open your first paragraph with an achievement that makes a strong case for you as an ideal candidate. Try to feature an accomplishment that you can quantify using metrics or student data to differentiate yourself from other applicants. Avoid simply focusing on your enthusiasm for the opportunity. Instead, provide the hiring manager with tangible reasons to hire you based on your background. Below, you’ll find an example to help you craft a strong introductory paragraph.

Identifying new educational strategies with faculty and academic teams to aid struggling high school students during teacher absences was one of my proudest career accomplishments. Our efforts helped to increase grade point averages for math courses by over 10% each semester. I believe I can achieve similar results for your organization in the substitute teacher position.

As an accomplished substitute teacher, I am excited for the opportunity to continue to grow as a teaching professional with your school. My credentials and years of experience exceed the requirements you’re looking for and position me as the best candidate for the position.

Body Paragraphs

Your body paragraphs should continue to highlight your professional achievements and qualifications for the hiring manager. Quantifying your accomplishments will paint a clearer picture for the reader and help you tell your story better. Providing specific details of your personal experiences as a teacher will be much more impactful than simply listing vague job duties. Consider using a list of bullet points to improve the readability of your content.

You’ll also want to discuss the school’s reputation. However, don’t spend multiple sentences talking about the organization, as you want to keep the hiring manager’s focus on your qualifications and experience. Instead, you should explain how the school’s reputation aligns with your background as an educator. Below, you’ll find an example to help you craft your body paragraphs on your cover letter.

As you can see from my attached resume, I have over 12 years of experience as a substitute teacher for Chester County Public Schools providing individualized instruction to ESL students. Your organization’s reputation for increasing literacy rates strongly aligns with my professional background. I am confident that I can help you continue to improve student academic performance and literacy based on my professional achievements:

  • Implemented lesson plans for classes of 5-10 ESL students, provided one-on-one tutoring sessions, and identified appropriate learning strategies for students based on needs assessments and evaluations
  • Improved grasp of English using differentiated instruction and visual learning techniques, resulting in a 10%-30% increase in academic performance on average
  • Attended meetings with ESL teachers and parents to create individualized education plans (IEPs) and coordinate after school tutoring sessions

I am excited for the opportunity to work with Montgomery Elementary as a substitute teacher. I have plenty of experience working as a sub for ESL students, and I am sure I can make a strong impact based on past responsibilities:

  • Taught lesson plans to small groups of ESL students
  • Communicated with teachers and parents as needed regarding student performance
  • Attended meetings with the education team to review student data

Your closing paragraph should contain a CTA that encourages the hiring manager to take the next step and bring you in for an interview. You should also include a sentence that reinforces how you can create value for the organization based on your professional background. Don’t forget to thank the hiring manager for their time in the last sentence of your paragraph. Below, you’ll find an example to help you craft your closing section.

I look forward to scheduling an interview to provide more insights into how my background in ESL teaching can help foster personal and academic growth for diverse student populations. You may contact me at your earliest convenience for any follow-up questions you may have on my experience. Thank you for your time and consideration.
