Dear Mr. Brown,

In two years as a junior IT data analyst with AIC Holdings, I was recognized as Employee of the Month several times thanks to my passion for teamwork and attention to detail. I hope to bring the same focus and dedication to Upward Labs as a Data Analyst.

Dear Ms. Keith,

Being selected as my company’s data spokesperson to further the public’s understanding of civil liberties issues through accessible statistical information was my proudest career achievement to date. My clear explanations and infographics increased engagement and activism by 43% in 2020. I hope to leverage my talent for elucidating data as a Lead Analyst at the ACLU of Florida.

As a seasoned analyst with more than eight years of experience in the sector, ACLU’s mission to promote civil rights for Florida residents appeals to me. I believe that data can be instrumental in raising awareness and deepening understanding of these important issues. My recent achievements include:

  • Spearheading a data solutions project that played a critical role in forming state policy on offender rehabilitation
  • Leading a large team to develop a tracking tool to monitor the occurrence of hate crimes against immigrant populations
  • Devising and delivering a staff training program to increase understanding of data verification and trend identification

I would like to set up an interview to discuss how my detailed knowledge of data analysis techniques and inspirational leadership can help ACLU continue to improve the Florida community’s lives and opportunities. I am available at your convenience.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Tran

P.S. I would like to explain how I increased processing accuracy by 65% last year.

Data Analyst Cover Letter Checklist

An optimal data analyst cover letter should include five main elements:

1. Heading. Use a professional template to make this information easy to find and understand. Your heading should include:

  • Your name, title, and contact details
  • The date it was written
  • The addressee’s details

2. Salutation. Greet the hiring manager by name using Mr. or Ms. and their last name. “Dear Hiring Manager” is the best option if you can’t find the hiring manager’s name on the job listing or company website.

3. Introduction. Your opening paragraph needs to pique the interest of the hiring manager, so they want to continue reading. It’s also where you introduce yourself and express your interest in the position.

4. Body paragraphs. Use the next two paragraphs to demonstrate that you have the relevant skills, experience, and attributes to be successful in the position. A bulleted list can be a beneficial addition as it allows the hiring manager to see your biggest achievements at a glance.

5. Closing section. Your conclusion is where you encourage the hiring manager to invite you for an interview. Adding a postscript highlights one final accomplishment and helps leave a lasting impression on the hiring manager.

Introduction

Your opening paragraph does a lot of heavy lifting. It has to provide a short introduction, express your interest in the position, and encourage the hiring manager to continue reading. The best way to do all this is to build your introductory paragraph around one main achievement. Choose an accomplishment that’s quantifiable and relevant, and avoid using a basic fact, such as your level of education.

Good

Identifying and enhancing the customer interactions that were likely to lead to sales conversions, resulting in an additional $432,000 in annual revenue, is one of my biggest achievements as a data analyst. I hope to bring similar results to Gibson Enterprises as a data analyst.

Bad

My name is Taylor Stock, and I’m writing to express my interest in the data analyst job you recently advertised. I have a master’s degree in data analytics and am well-qualified for the position.

Body Paragraphs

Begin the body of your cover letter by expressing interest in the position and the company that’s hiring. Being specific about why you admire the company shows the hiring manager you’ve researched the organization before sending your application.

The next paragraph should detail accomplishments that demonstrate you can meet the company’s key priorities, which can generally be found in the job description. Choose achievements that are quantifiable and have a positive outcome so the hiring manager gets a clear idea of what you can do for the company.

Good

During my 12 years as a data analyst, I’ve focused on finding innovative ways to use information to grow great businesses. I’m drawn to Gibson Enterprises’ reputation for making data-driven business decisions to sell quality products.

I’m excited to use my analytical skills to help the Gibson team achieve additional success. My past successes have included:

  • Using customer data to identify areas of improvement, resulting in an 18% increase in customer retention
  • Designing and implementing A/B experiments that improved the conversion rate by 24%
  • Providing shipping modeling and analysis that reduced shipping costs by 12%, resulting in $732,000 in annual savings

Bad

Your job listing indicates that you require someone with at least nine years of experience as a data analyst. I’ve been working as a data analyst for 12 years and believe I am the best person to help Gibson Enterprises with your data analysis needs.

In the past, I have been responsible for:

  • Collecting and analyzing data relating to customers, marketing, and shipping
  • Providing reports to product designers and executives
  • Helped maintain data accuracy by improving systems

Closing

Your closing should do more than just thank the hiring manager for their time and attention. Instead, encourage the hiring manager to take the next step by scheduling an interview with you.

A postscript is a useful addition that can help draw the hiring manager’s eye and highlight a final accomplishment you want them to know about. This doesn’t need to be a work-related achievement; as long as it’s relevant to the position, you can include volunteer work, competitions, or awards.

Good

I’d like an opportunity to discuss how my analytical skills and past work experience can help further Gibson Enterprises’ business goals. Please feel free to contact me to arrange a time that suits your schedule.

Best regards,

Steven Pendergast

P.S. I’d love to tell you about making it to the finals of the International Data Analysis Olympiad!

Bad

Thank you for taking the time to read and consider my application. Please contact me if you need clarification on any points in my resume or if I can provide any further information.
