With the emergence of ChatGPT in November 2022, the question of how AI may affect jobs is top of mind for many. The publicly accessible AI chatbot has many capabilities, including the ability to answer questions, create content, write code, and more.
In February, ResumeBuilder.com surveyed 1,000 U.S. business leaders to see how many companies currently use or plan to use ChatGPT.
Key findings:
- 49% of companies currently use ChatGPT; 30% plan to
- 48% of companies using ChatGPT say it’s replaced workers
- 25% companies using ChatGPT have already saved $75k+
- 93% of current users say they plan to expand their use of ChatGPT
- 90% of business leaders say chatGPT experience is a beneficial skill for job seekers
Half of companies are using ChatGPT
Based on our survey, currently, 49% of companies say they are using ChatGPT, 93% of whom say they plan to expand their use of the chatbot.
Additionally, 30% of companies say they plan to start using it, 85% of whom say they will start doing so within the next 6 months.
Companies use ChatGPT to assist in hiring, writing code, and more
Business leaders say their companies have a variety of uses for ChatGPT.
Of companies that currently use ChatGPT, 66% use it for writing code, while 58% use it for copywriting/content creation, 57% for customer support, and 52% for creating summaries of meetings or documents.
The majority of companies also use ChatGPT to facilitate hiring; 77% say it helps them write job descriptions, 66% draft interview requisitions, and 65% respond to applicants.
Overall, most business leaders are impressed by ChatGPT’s work. Fifty-five percent say the quality of work produced by ChatGPT is ‘excellent,’ while 34% say it’s ‘very good.’
“There is a lot of excitement regarding the use of ChatGPT,” says Chief Career Advisor Stacie Haller.
“In talent acquisition, the more mundane tasks like writing job descriptions, interview questions, and following up with candidates are already being replaced by ChatGPT. Writing code is another area where this technology can provide output, while employees focus on more strategic initiatives”
“Just as technology has evolved and replaced workers over the last several decades, ChatGPT may impact the way we work. As with all new technologies, companies’ use of ChatGPT will be continuously evolving, and we are only at the onset.”
1 in 2 companies have replaced workers with ChatGPT since November
Forty-eight percent of companies have replaced workers with ChatGPT since it became available in November of last year.
In the future, ChatGPT may lead to more layoffs according to business leaders. When asked if ChatGPT will lead to any workers being laid off by the end of 2023, 33% of business leaders say ‘definitely,’ while 26% say ‘probably.’
Within 5 years, 63% of business leaders say ChatGPT will ‘definitely’ (32%) or ‘probably’ (31%) lead to workers being laid off.
For business leaders whose companies haven’t started using ChatGPT but plan to, fewer think layoffs will result. Only 9% say the company’s use of ChatGPT will ‘definitely’ lead to workers being laid off, while 19% say ‘probably.’
“Since this new technology is just ramping up in the workplace, workers need to surely be thinking of how it may affect the responsibilities of their current job,” says Haller. “The results of this survey shows that employers are looking to streamline some job responsibilities using ChatGPT.”
1 in 4 companies have saved $75k+ already with ChatGPT
Companies are saving money by using ChatGPT. Overall, 99% of companies using ChatGPT say they’ve saved money.
Forty-eight percent of companies have saved more than $50,000, while 11% have saved over $100,000.
“The economic model for using ChatGPT is also evolving,” says Haller. “It will be interesting to see how this plays out in terms of savings as well as the reorg of certain jobs within the companies.”
9 in 10 business leaders say it’s beneficial for job applicants to have ChatGPT experience
It’s possible having ChatGPT experience could help workers retain their jobs.
When assessing candidates to hire, 92% of business leaders say having AI/chatbot experience is a plus, and 90% say it’s beneficial if the candidate has ChatGPT-specific experience.
“Companies are already expecting candidates to have experience with ChatGPT,” says Haller.
“The use of this technology is certainly something employees and candidates will want to stay current on. Job seekers certainly should add this skill if they have it to their resume, and employers should add it to their list of required or preferred skills if it’s something they expect from candidates. As seen throughout history, as technology evolves, workers’ skills need to evolve and change as well.”
Methodology
All data found within this report derives from a survey commissioned by ResumeBuilder.com and conducted online by survey platform Pollfish on February 15, 2023. In total, 1,000 U.S. business leaders were surveyed.
Appropriate respondents were found through a screening question. They had to answer that their company currently uses or plans to use ChatGPT. Additionally, respondents had to meet demographic criteria, including age (25+), income (50k+), number of employees (2+), employment status, and organizational role.
This survey utilizes a convenience sampling method. For more information contact [email protected].
