Conversations continue around how artificial intelligence (AI) will change the future of work. To learn how business leaders believe the technology will impact their company, in November, ResumeBuilder surveyed 750 business leaders at companies that currently or plan to use AI in 2024.

4 in 10 Companies Say AI Likely To Replace Employees in 2024
According to our survey, 53% of companies currently use AI and 24% plan to start in 2024.
Of companies currently using AI, 37% say workers were laid off in 2023 because they were no longer needed due to the company’s use of AI.
In 2024, 44% of companies who use AI or plan to by next year say employees will definitely (21%) or probably (23%) be laid off due to the use of AI.
“I’m not surprised by these results, and I hope this article is a wake-up call for anyone rejecting AI in their industry or function,” says ResumeBuilder’s resume and career strategist Julia Toothacre. “I would advise employees to consider all parts of their position and what could possibly be taken over by AI. Figure out what part of your position can’t be taken over by AI or where AI might need human intervention and become the go-to person for those tasks. Employees need to find ways to grow their skills and stay relevant in their field if they don’t want their job to be given to AI.”
96% of Companies Will Be Looking for Workers With AI Skills
Ninety-one percent of companies using or planning to start using AI in 2024 will hire new employees next year, and 96% say it will be very beneficial (65%) or somewhat beneficial (31%) for candidates to have experience with AI.
Additionally, 83% of this same group say employees who have AI skills will definitely (45%) or probably (38%) have more job security at their company than those who do not.
“At the end of the day, employees need to realize that AI isn’t coming, it’s here. It’s time to embrace it if it may be a threat to your position or career path,” adds Toothacre.
Customer Support Is Top Use of AI
When asked what they are currently using AI for, business leaders say customer support (67%), research (66%), and creating summaries of meetings or documents (61%).
For companies that plan to start using AI in 2024, the top anticipated uses include customer support (62%), creating summaries of meetings or documents (57%), and research (52%).
Methodology
This online poll was commissioned by ResumeBuilder.com and conducted via Pollfish. It was launched on November 2, 2023. Respondents consist of a national sample of 750 individuals. To be eligible to take the survey respondents had to be 25 or older, employed for wages (90% quota) or self-employed (10% quota), have a household income of at least $75,000 per year, and work at a company with 11 or more employees.
Respondents also identified their job role as a C-level executive, president/CEO/chairperson, director, owner or partner, chief technology officer, or chief financial officer.
