How to Write a Real Estate Agent Resume

Your resume has one purpose: to get you interviews for jobs you want. You can ensure your resume serves that purpose if you focus on your most relevant skills and display them as clearly as possible. The section-specific tips below will help you give your resume the focus and clarity it needs to move your job search forward.

1. Write an impressive profile summarizing your qualifications

In most cases, your resume Profile is your very first impression on hiring managers. Make it a good one. Use your Profile to call out your top qualifications. What sets you apart from other candidates for the same real estate job? For instance, maybe you have a unique approach to client relations or special insight into the local market. Or perhaps you recently finished an advanced degree in your field. Whatever your top qualifications, feature them in your Profile, and you can compel recipients of your resume to keep reading.

Don’t be afraid to get specific in this section. A well-chosen achievement in your Profile can drive home the broader themes you’re showcasing. Use an achievement that quantifies your results in terms of a specific ranking, percentage, or dollar amount.

(Note, it’s usually easier to write your Profile after you’ve built the other sections of your resume.)

Profile Example

Licensed Real Estate Agent with 9+ years’ experience in the Idaho commercial and residential property market. Skilled communicator who builds positive relationships with diverse buyers, sellers, and team members. Career highlights include maintaining a 75% new business referral rate for three consecutive years. Bilingual: Fluent in English and Spanish.

2. Add an eye-catching experience section

For each job description, consider setting off any points that have specific results, numbers, or percentages. These may include details on the following:

  • how many home sales you’ve made
  • the rate of sales at or above asking price
  • the amount of new clients you’ve brought in

By distinguishing these points from your job duties, you can draw the hiring manager’s eye to your most impressive information and show how you’ve made a positive impact on past employers.

There are various ways to set off your results-based info on the page. Consider formatting them in bold or with a different bullet point symbol. You can also separate them from your duties’ bullet points under a subheading such as “Highlights” or “Key Achievements.”

Experience Example

Senior Commercial Real Estate Agent, BC Commercial Realty, Burlington, VT | March 2015 to Present

  • Facilitate meetings with lenders, architects, engineers, and property managers to ensure efficient project completion
  • Negotiate lease terms and prices with each client

  • Contributed to commercial real estate transactions with ~$1.3M yearly sales volume

3. Include relevant education and certifications

Your real estate coursework, license, and continuing education are the basis for a successful career in your field. As such, they deserve a prominent spot on your resume. List each credential in a separate section right below your Experience section and apply similar formatting. For instance, if in your Experience section you’ve italicized employer names, also italicize the school names appearing in your Education section.

Following are templates and examples to help you format your education and certification details:

Education

Template:

[Degree Name],[School Name], [City, ST] | [Year – optional]

Example:

Associate of Applied Science — Marketing Communications, College of Western Idaho, Nampa, ID | 2014

Certification

Template:

[Certification Name],[Awarding Organization] | [Year – optional]

Example:

Real Estate Salesperson,State of Idaho | 2020

4. List relevant key skills and proficiencies

You can give your resume a big boost by adding keywords. Most employers now use an applicant tracking system (ATS), which scans each submitted resume for keywords relevant to the job opening. When the ATS finds a resume with many relevant keywords, it flags the document for the hiring manager.

Add a keyword-rich “Skills” or “Expertise” section to make your resume ATS friendly. In most cases, you should add this section right below your Profile summary. Here are some common keywords for a real estate agent:

Key Skills and Proficiencies
Buyer & Seller Needs Assessment Client Networking
Contract Law Contract Negotiations
Cross-Team Collaboration Customer Relations & Service
Digital & Social Media Marketing Federal & Local Real Estate Law

How to Pick the Best Real Estate Agent Resume Template

A clear and straightforward resume template is usually best for real estate professionals. Choose a visual template that lets the recruiter or hiring manager quickly take in relevant information about you and your background. Avoid any template that calls undue attention to itself with more elaborate design elements.

Frequently Asked Questions: Real Estate Agent Resume Examples and Advice

What are common action verbs for real estate agent resumes? +

It’s easy to get stuck when writing your resume job descriptions. You may find yourself running out of action verbs to express your work in real estate. To help you over the hump, we put together this list of strong resume verbs. Consider using any of these as the first word of your bullet points in your Experience section:

Action Verbs
Advise Appraise
Close Create
Determine Educate
Engage Evaluate
Examine Generate
Improve Inform
Interview Manage
Market Negotiate
Network Persuade
Prepare Promote
Record Schedule
Sell Update
Win

NOTE: The above verbs are all in the present tense. Use the present tense to describe your current job duties. But use the past tense (e.g., “Created,” “Improved”) to describe any projects you’ve completed or achievements you’ve had in your current job. Also, use the past tense to describe both duties and achievements in all your previous jobs.

How do you align your resume with a job posting?+

The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that jobs for real estate agents will increase by about five percent between 2021 and 2031. This growth rate is roughly the same as the average for all US vocations.

You can get more interviews in this field if you tailor your resume for each application you send.

One great way to do this is by selectively adding descriptions of the companies where you’ve worked. Company descriptions let you show any similarities between your past employers and the organization that posted the job opening. For example, maybe you’ve worked for companies of a similar size or in a similar market. Or perhaps you’ve worked at organizations with a similar mission or leadership philosophy. By working these details into your descriptions, you can make your resume more relevant to the job at hand.

Place each description in brackets right next to or below the company name. It also helps to match formatting. For instance, if you’ve italicized the company name, italicize the company description.

What is the best real estate agent resume format?+

In nearly all cases, you should opt for a Combination or Hybrid resume because they are the easiest for hiring managers to learn about your pertinent skills and experience — it’s also easiest for you to modify based on your job goals too.

With the Combination format, you highlight your most relevant skills and experience in your Experience or Work History section and an intro section. (This combination of work history and intro content is where the format gets its name.) Your resume intro may take the form of a Profile summary, Key Skills section, and/or Career Highlights section. By carefully choosing the details for these sections, you can (a) position yourself for your target job and (b) give hiring managers a clear, quick view of what you offer them.

Expert Advice: Include a cover letter with your resume

Craft a strong cover letter to increase your chances of landing an interview. The key to optimizing your cover letter is to customize it based on each employer you apply to.
