Tips for Writing a Better Medical Assistant Resume
Quantify your clinical experience to feature your successes as a medical assistant
A hiring manager might only glance at your resume, which is why it is important to provide as much information as possible about your experience. The hiring manager needs to see how your skills apply to their company and the specific job being filled. Try to be as specific as possible and use easy-to-understand quantities. In your employment bullets, answer questions such as:
- How many patients did you see per day?
- How many people were part of the care team?
- How many beds in the unit?
By answering these questions, you give the hiring manager a good idea of what your experience means on a day-to-day basis.
Example #1
Good
Prepared patient charts and recorded vitals for more than 75 patients per day, updating medical records with accurate information.
Bad
Checked in patients prior to the exam.
Example #2
Good
Worked with 11 other medical professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care to a 75-bed unit.
Bad
Collaborated with doctors and nurses on patient care.
Highlight your soft skills
As a medical assistant, you deal directly with patients. While it may seem more important to feature clinical skills, a great bedside manner and leadership skills can be just as important in a health care setting. In a busy health care provider’s office, the ability to calm the atmosphere and keep the office operating smoothly is just as valuable. When tailoring your resume, be sure to highlight at least one soft skill associated with the position or listed in the job posting.
Example #1
Good
Implemented new check-in procedure that streamlined operations and reduced customer complaints by 10%.
Bad
Created a new check-in process.
Example #2
Good
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills when taking patient medical histories and collaborating with doctors to update patient records for more than 70 patients daily.
Bad
Accurately updated patient records using EHR software.
