Healthcare and Support Resume Examples & Writing Guides

Healthcare support encompasses a number of professions, from phlebotomists and orderlies to home health care aides. One thing they all have in common is they’re poised to play a greater role in the U.S. workforce during the coming decades. The need for home health care and personal care aides, for example, is projected to grow by 33% over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That equates to more than a million new jobs.

An increase in jobs, however, doesn’t mean you won’t face competition when you apply for a position in health care support. You still need to have a concise, well-written resume that highlights your skills and experience. Below, you’ll find downloadable resume examples for everyone from beginners to more experienced workers, as well as tips on improving your resume and ways to craft your resume for a specific position.

Tips for Writing a Better Healthcare and Support Resume

Highlight a key skill needed to be successful for the role

Sometimes not all your experience is from your professional life. If you have a key skill that you gained through volunteer work, for example, be sure to include this on your resume, especially if it is applicable to the job for which you’re applying. Don’t forget to include details that flesh out the experience.

Example #1

Volunteered at local nursing home while attending high school; assisted staff in feeding and caring for 45+ residents; provided enrichment opportunities and helped run craft classes and workshops

Volunteer, Briarhaven Nursing Home, 2008-12

Example #2

Member, Pre-Med Student Club, 2017-2021. President, 2020-2021

Quantify your experience to feature your successes

Being specific and quantifying your achievements makes it easier for hiring managers to get a good sense of your skills. Think about how many patients you’ve worked with or other pertinent details, especially when they help show your experiences in a good light.

Example #1

Reported directly to senior medical team members, including charge nurse and head of ward; worked under their supervision to provide aid and assistance to patients in 12-bed pulmonary unit

Provided aid and assistance as needed in pulmonary ward

Example #2

Performed 30-40 blood draws daily in busy urban blood draw laboratory

How to Align Your Resume With the Job Description

One of the best sources of information when you’re job hunting is the job ads you’ll be reviewing. The job description that an employer posts tells you what their ideal candidate looks like. Your job, once you have that information in hand, is to ensure that your resume comes close to matching that job description. How? Here’s one method that works.

First, take a job description that you’re qualified for and print it out. Look carefully at the action verbs and descriptive words used in the text — especially those that appear early in the document. Take a highlighter and mark up these important words. Make a list of them when you’re done, and consider if there are ways you can mirror those words in your own resume. Here’s an example, based on a job ad for a medical assistant at a practice focused on breast imaging and cancer screening.

Example Job Description

We are looking for a full-time (M-F) medical assistant to assist radiologists with procedures and many other aspects of the day-to-day operation. Must have a teamwork mindset, but also be able to work individually.

General Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Prepare exams in EHR/PACS systems
  • Prepare exam rooms and medical instruments
  • Assist physicians with workflow and procedures such as ultrasound, core biopsies, fine needle aspirations & cyst aspirations
  • Prepare specimens and paperwork for laboratory analysis
  • Schedule appointments and handle calls to patients, physician offices, and labs
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures and complying with regulations

  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Professionalism and friendly demeanor
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to deliver compassionate support, attention, and assistance to aid in managing difficult/emotional patient situations
  • A basic understanding of patient care, medical terminology, and coding procedures is a plus

Based on this job description, the ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Teamwork mindset
  • Work individually
  • Prepare exams
  • Assist physicians
  • Prepare specimens
  • Schedule appointments
  • Multitask effectively
  • Professionalism and friendly demeanor
  • Customer service skills
  • Compassionate support
  • Understanding of patient care

Now, consider your own professional experience and think about what you’ve done that might fit those categories. You might end up with a job description that looks something like this:
