Highlight your skill at partnering with diverse work styles and personalities. Also show you can stay calm in stressful situations. This will give employers more confidence in your ability to de-escalate employee conflicts and create a positive work environment.

Use the right narrative tense

When writing their job descriptions, many jobseekers mistakenly use the third-person narrative tense (“Collaborates with business leaders”, “Develops and implements programs”, etc.). This makes for awkward and strangely distant reading on the hiring manager’s part. It’s as if a candidate named Jimmy were to come in for an interview and say, “Jimmy is glad to meet you. Jimmy would be excited to work for your company.”

A resume is just the written form of how you’d usually describe yourself. Therefore, you should use the first-person tense (“Collaborate with business leaders”, “Develop and implement programs”, etc.). When you’re drafting your resume, a quick way to know you’re using the correct verb tense is to start every sentence with “I”, then delete it and capitalize the first letter of the following verb.

How to Align Your Resume With the Job Description

Hiring managers have a certain desired skill set for each position. Often, they’ll craft the job description featured on their employment advertisement to reflect the specific duties that they require for the position. When you tailor your resume and cover letter to the posted job description, your resume will align more with what the employer is looking for. This ensures that your resume rises to the top, getting past the applicant tracking systems (ATS) and getting to a human resources specialist just like you who will manually review it.

If you aren’t sure what skills you should feature more prominently, study the posted job description. The most important skills will typically be listed first and may be listed more than once. Compare your past successes and work experience to the listed requirements for the human resources position you’re applying to.
