How To Write a Pharmacy Technician Cover Letter

Your pharmacy technician cover letter should usually have five sections in this order:

1. Heading

At the top of the page, include:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The date
  • The recipient’s name, title, organization, and contact information (when available)

(Note: Feel free to omit this section if you send your letter by email and your contact details are part of your signature.)

Example

Janine Gomez
Pharmacy Technician | [email protected] | (678) 901-2345 | 456 My Street, Omaha, NE 78901

February 10, 2024

Paula Hickman
Senior Hiring Manager
CVS Health
(456) 789-0123
[email protected]

2. Salutation

If you can’t find the recipient’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.”

Examples

Dear Ms. Porter,

Dear Alto Pharmacy Hiring Manager:

3. “Hook” or introduction

Catch the reader’s attention by citing an achievement from your resume or a key credential the organization seeks in applicants.

Example

Leading my team to achieve over 99% dosage calculation accuracy was my most significant accomplishment last year. I can offer similar leadership and diligence as a senior pharmacy technician at Walgreens.

4. Body paragraph(s)

Explain why the job or employer interests you. Then, cite a few more of your key achievements or qualifications, possibly using bullet points.

Example

As a technician with three years of experience and a drive to use my skills to impact people’s well-being positively, I want to be part of CVS Health’s mission to empower its clients through health education. I know the role requires a compassionate and caring individual, and my recent achievements are evidence of my suitability. These include:

  • Achieving a 98% patient satisfaction rating during my pharmacy’s most recent client feedback cycle
  • Assisting with training two new technicians to expand their understanding of OSHA regulations
  • Receiving a workplace commendation for my ability to switch seamlessly between workstations without compromising accuracy or efficiency

5. Closing

Finally, request an interview for the position.

Example

I would like to schedule an interview to discuss how my skills and experience can help me provide outstanding service to your patients. Please feel free to get in touch to arrange a convenient date and time.

Sincerely,

Casey Rudd

Pharmacy Technician Cover Letter Tips

1. Show you can provide top-caliber pharmacy support

Start your letter strong with an example of your success as a pharmacy technician. What’s one key way you’ve worked with pharmacists to enhance operations or uphold facility standards? For instance, maybe you created an inventory management system that increased medication availability. Or perhaps you achieved outstanding accuracy in dosage calculations.

Example

Designing and implementing a new stock management system that cut down on medication waste by 34% was my crowning career achievement in 2023. My strategic skills and excellent technical knowledge will make me an asset to the CVS Health pharmacy team.

2. Explain why you’re drawn to the role

On a separate document or sheet of paper, take 10 minutes to brainstorm why this pharmacy technician job interests you. For example, maybe it’s at a hospital or other medical facility you’d like to transition to. Or it might involve getting refill authorizations, a focus of your current role. Also, consider any details on the job posting about the pharmacy’s work culture or service philosophy and how that compares to your own.

When you’re done brainstorming, review your notes: Do any stand out as important or persuasive? Take another 10 minutes to brainstorm and elaborate on them. Repeat this process until you have two or three concise sentences that speak to the job opening. By adding these to your cover letter, you can show managers you’re responding to their job posting directly.

Example

I know you are looking for an adaptable individual who can prioritize effectively and provide consistent performance across multiple workstations. My seven years of technical experience and recent achievements prove I embody this description perfectly.

3. Highlight your other pharmacy skills

Add a short list of bullet points to show your success in other key work areas for a pharmacy technician, like teamwork, patient education, or insurance claim processing. When possible, use this section to further emphasize your focus on working effectively with pharmacists and fellow technicians.

Example

The following accomplishments show my suitability:

  • Creating and delivering a range of educational materials to help patients understand how to use EpiPens safely
  • Optimizing the store’s merchandise shelving to increase sales by 32% in a single fiscal quarter
  • Achieving consistent patient satisfaction scores of over 95% because of my professional demeanor and clear explanations of drug administration procedures and potential interactions

Pharmacy Technician Cover Letter Frequently Asked Questions

How should I introduce myself in my cover letter?-

In passing. As long as you give your signature at the bottom, you don’t need to introduce yourself formally with a line like “My name is…” or “I am a…” Instead, work any basic details about yourself into a sentence that speaks more directly to the job opening at hand. For example, don’t write, “I am a pharmacy technician with six years of experience in a retail pharmacy setting.” Instead, say, “With six years of retail pharmacy experience, I can help your team achieve its mission to…”

What’s the most important part of a cover letter?-

Any explanation you give for why the specific job opening or employer interests you. These details distinguish the cover letter from your resume and other application materials and can help you get past applicant tracking systems (ATS). They also set the stage for a good interview discussion about how you fit the role and the organization’s work culture.;

How do I write a cover letter for a job I’m not qualified for?-

Don’t. Limit your search to jobs you’re generally qualified for, and never apply to a role you doubt you could satisfy.

That said, there’s room for discretion. You don’t need to meet every qualification on a job posting to be confident you’d excel, especially if you have other pertinent skills or experiences to draw on. In these cases, your cover letter can help. Toward the end of your letter, feel free to briefly acknowledge the qualification gap and explain why your other experiences make up for it. This gives hiring managers helpful context and can motivate them to call you even if you aren’t a perfect fit on paper.
