One of the key factors fueling this rapid growth is the fact that just over half of all registered nurses were over the age of 50 in 2018. Common Key Skills and Action Verbs for Nursing Student Resumes

Many employers now use applicant tracking systems to speed up the hiring process. This type of software scans resumes and other application materials to determine if they contain target keywords selected by the recruiter or hiring manager. If your resume doesn’t contain any of these target keywords, there’s a good chance your application will be rejected before anyone even reads it. Tips for Writing a Better Nursing Student Resume

Showcase the experience you gained during your clinical placement

As a nursing student, you don’t have any experience as a registered nurse, and you won’t be eligible to sit for the national certification exam until you graduate. That’s why it’s so important to highlight the nursing experience you gained during your clinical placement. This includes clinical skills as well as “soft” skills like putting patients at ease and communicating with concerned family members. To ensure your resume makes it to the right person, be sure to use action verbs and relevant keywords.

Highlight your nursing education, including classroom learning and clinical experiences

You may not have your degree yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t discuss your nursing education in your resume. Highlighting your education can help the hiring manager determine if you have the right knowledge and skills to excel in a graduate nursing position. It can also help ensure you have enough keywords in your resume to make it past the applicant-tracking system.

How to Align Your Resume With the Job Description

Recruiters and hiring managers have one goal in mind: to find a candidate who meets their needs. One way to stand out from other applicants is to write your resume so that it mirrors the language used in the job description.

If you’re not sure which skills and experiences to highlight, read the job description carefully. The most important qualifications are usually listed near the top of the posting. You may also notice a few qualifications mentioned more than once, which usually means they’re among the most important requirements for the job. As you write your resume, make sure it explains how you meet these qualifications.

Example Nursing Student Job Description


Smithson Memorial Hospital is a 423-bed facility that provides preventive care, management of chronic illnesses and care for acute illnesses and injuries to residents of Smithson and surrounding areas. Put your nursing skills to good use in a collaborative environment. Use your excellent communication skills to educate patients on their conditions and make arrangements with family members for post-discharge care. This position requires you to demonstrate clinical skills and compassion as you provide direct patient care.

Responsibilities:
