1. Keep a forthright tone

For nearly any piece of regular writing, it’s important to choose language that sets and maintains a clear tone or “voice.” That principle also applies to resumes, which call for a formal yet forthright style (as opposed to the more casual, personable tone of a LinkedIn profile and the eager, confident voice of a cover letter).

To achieve a forthright voice on your resume, try using simple sentences and straightforward descriptions of your experience. Keep this advice in mind, especially when writing your profile section, since you may be tempted (or think you need) to use overly “promotional” terms like Brilliant or Outstanding at, when a more modest yet direct phrase like Skilled in is better.

2. Use the right narrative tense

When writing their job description, many jobseekers mistakenly use the third-person narrative tense (“Collaborates with business leaders…. Develops and implements programs…”). This makes for awkward and strangely distant reading on the hiring manager’s part. It’s as if a candidate named Jimmy were to come in for an interview and say, “Jimmy is glad to meet you. Jimmy would be excited to work for your company.”

A resume is just the written form of how you’d usually describe yourself. You’re writing about yourself and the things you do, not anyone else. Therefore, you should use the first-person tense (“Collaborate with business leaders…. Develop and implement programs…”). When you’re drafting your resume, a quick way to know you’re using the correct verb tense is to start every sentence with “I,” then delete it and capitalize the first letter of the following verb.
